Load Cell Amplifier: Clean Signals from Field Sensors

load cell amplifier

In geotechnical monitoring, the data is only as solid as the signal that carries it. Load cells buried in boreholes or mounted on structural steel pick up micro-changes, but those tiny voltage swings can easily drown in noise. A load cell amplifier takes that fragile sensor output and turns it into something a data logger can read without guessing. Kingmach has been making these amplifiers for years, and the design reflects a practical understanding of what field engineers deal with: long cable runs, temperature swings, and sensors that drift. The housing is rugged enough for construction sites, and the connections are straightforward. You don’t need a manual to figure out the wiring. For projects where every micron of displacement matters, this amplifier sits between the load cell and the control room, doing its job without much fuss.

Technical Detail

Configured around process stability, mold life, and long-term uptime.

Kingmach builds the load cell amplifier with geotechnical applications in mind. It powers strain gauge-based sensors with a stable excitation voltage—often selectable between 5V and 10V to match different load cell specifications—and amplifies the returning millivolt signal to a standard analog output, commonly 0–10V or 4–20mA. This makes integration with most data acquisition systems straightforward. The gain can be set via DIP switches or jumpers, allowing one amplifier model to accommodate load cells with varying sensitivity ranges from 1 mV/V to 4 mV/V. Calibration is done with known shunt resistors, so you can verify the setup without needing physical weights every time. A low-pass filter is built in to suppress 50/60 Hz noise, which helps when cables run next to power lines. The aluminum enclosure is sealed against dust and splashes, rated IP65, and features robust terminal blocks that accept ferrules—details that matter when installations are long-term and weather-exposed. Common uses include tieback anchors, retaining walls, and tunnel linings, where load cells are installed and left to operate for years. Kingmach supplies these amplifiers globally, with engineering support available for configuration questions.

FAQ

Common technical questions

Can this amplifier work with both tension and compression load cells?

Yes, the amplifier is bipolar—it handles positive and negative signal spans, so it’s fine for load cells measuring tension or compression. You may need to set the offset during commissioning to center the output range.

How do I adjust the gain for a specific load cell sensitivity?

Inside the housing there are DIP switches or a rotary selector that let you set the gain factor. The manual has a table showing what setting to use for common sensitivities like 2 mV/V. If your cell is outside that range, we can help you calculate the right resistor values.

Will the amplifier survive on a construction site?

It’s designed to. The enclosure is cast aluminum with an IP65 seal, so it handles dirt and light hosing. The electronics are conformally coated against humidity. For extreme vibration, it’s better to mount it in a panel nearby rather than directly on the load cell.

What kind of power does it need?

Most models run on 12–24 VDC, which is easy to supply from a site battery or a solar-charged system. The excitation and output are isolated from the power supply to prevent ground loop issues.

Can I get a custom output signal, like RS485?

The standard is analog, but we do offer a digital version with Modbus RTU over RS485 on request. That’s useful when you want to daisy-chain multiple amplifiers on a single bus. Just mention it when you inquire.
