Vibrating Wire Piezometers for Pore Pressure Monitoring
In piezometric tubes of earth-rock dams and at the joints of underground diaphragm walls, vibrating string pore water pressure gauges need to give stable readings year after year. This type of instrument has no vulnerable moving parts, and the frequency signal does not drift due to cable resistance fluctuations. It is very suitable for monitoring points that need to be buried for a long time. As a mid-range manufacturer of geotechnical instruments, Kingmach is able to adapt measuring ranges, cable lengths or permeable stone types to suit project requirements. If you encounter non-standard requirements when selecting models, the factory's technical team will usually give customized suggestions directly instead of letting you make do with the fixed model list.
Technical Detail
The core of the vibrating string pore water pressure gauge is a tensioned steel string. When subjected to water pressure, the diaphragm undergoes slight deformation, and the natural frequency of the string changes accordingly. Because the frequency signal will not attenuate along the long cable, the transmission distance of several hundred meters does not require intermediate amplification. This is where it is more convenient than the differential resistive sensor. The common structure on the market is: a threaded stainless steel barrel, with a ceramic permeable stone of a given pore size installed at the front end, and the vibrating wire unit and thermistor are packaged inside. The permeable stone is boiled and exhausted before being buried. After it is saturated, the water pressure at the front end can be truly transmitted to the sensing diaphragm. As a professional manufacturer of geotechnical instruments, Kingmach's series of vibrating wire piezometers cover common measuring ranges from 0.1 MPa to several MPa. The cables can be customized by the meter at the factory, eliminating the need for on-site wiring. The cylinder material is usually stainless steel, which has basic tolerance to the alkali aggregate reaction of concrete or underground weak acid environment. If the project is located in a coastal or industrial pollution area, you can also negotiate an upgrade to full marine grade stainless steel or install a lightning protection module. In projects such as tailings ponds, deep foundation pits, and river-crossing tunnels, which have strict requirements on instrument survival rates, the equipment has been soaked in water for a long time. Ordinary earth pressure cells may float out of sight in half a year. Vibrating string pore water pressure gauges are often the preferred option. In terms of construction and installation, the saturation tool kit and initial frequency record sheet provided by Kingmach with the instrument can help reduce rework on site. Don’t bury it in a hurry after you get it. Use a reader to check the frequency and calculate the initial pressure against the factory calibration table. If the deviation exceeds 5 words, you must communicate with the manufacturer to avoid burying it and then discovering something is wrong. For sites that require automated collection, this brand of sensors can be directly connected to most common vibrating wire collection modules without the need for additional signal converters. If the reading suddenly jumps during the after-sales period, the common troubleshooting sequence is to first check for moisture in the cable joint, then check for water-permeable stone blockage, and finally the sensor itself - these can be provided step by step on the technical support phone.

Essentially they are the same instrument, but they have different names in Chinese. They both measure pore water pressure through changes in the frequency of vibrating wires. The permeable stone only allows water to pass through and keeps soil particles out.
It's best to do this. There is air in the new permeable stone. If it is not pumped or boiled to saturation, the bubbles will buffer the pressure transmission, causing reading lag. Some people also use vacuum saturation devices on site, and the effect is similar.
It can be connected, but the joint must be sealed with vulcanization or heat shrinkage. If there are many breakpoints, it is better to replace it directly and let the manufacturer re-make it according to the original length.
First check whether the permeable stone is blocked - after the fine-grained soil blocks the pores, the water pressure transmission efficiency will decrease. Then check the insulation resistance of the cable joints. In places with high humidity, the insulation resistance of the joints will decrease and the frequency will be lowered. After these two items are ruled out, the sensor will not be suspected of zero drift.
